CHOX natural firelighters are hand-made in Hout Bay, Cape Town. The CHOX team works with great emphasis on consistency and quality, right from the firelighter to the packaging. Every single firelighter is produced by hand and carefully packed in our workshop at the vibrant Hout Bay Harbour.
The CHOX hessian bags are hand sawn by the Hangberg community in Houtbay. We are delighted to support small business entrepreneurship by using the communities skills to make some of our packaging.

CHOX how it all started
It all started with the question why are there no natural firelighters in South Africa? Firelighters that light up instantly and burn for longer than 5 minutes … Firelighters that work perfectly, are completely natural, environmentally friendly, odourless and non-toxic ... Firelighters that can be touched by children, without running the risk of leaving dangerous toxins on hands and food.
CHOX a locally produced product
The national lockdown allowed plenty of time for experimentation and of course braais! Using only natural components, namely wood and wax we started to experiment. The outcome was at first as bad as it was good, but finally we created the perfect recipe for a firelighter that lights up instantly and burns for up to 15 minutes. The first CHOX were sold to family and friends, and in a short time our little workshop was operating day and night in order to cover the demand of the friends of friends.
Soon the word had spread, and we started to need assistance to keep up with the production. Today a group of fantastic ladies work for CHOX Some had lost their jobs during lockdown, so we were quite excited that we had great people that made it possible for CHOX to expand and in return we could contribute a little by supporting them and their families.

Every single firelighter is produced by hand. Our CHOX team processes and forms the wood and the wax into a CHOX natural firelighter. Our different bags and packages are packed with care and love.
We were delighted to find a partner to sew and produce our hessian bag packaging. As a single mother, she had just started a business in Ocean View, teaching other women to sew and knit. CHOX is proud to work with Rozi and her creative skills in the production of some of our packaging.
